In this talk I present a framework for participation in the mathematics classroom informed by a focus on equity. Drawing on both my own experience as instructor and researcher, as well as a broader view of research into practice, I will illustrate the different components of the framework. We will experience a task to promote discussion of principles to support the participation of students, in particular students whose mathematical voices and ideas often go unnoticed. While most of my work is at the pre-college level, I will also present very preliminary results on a college-level project that works with instructors to explore the participation patterns of minoritized college students in STEM.
