In this talk we review the isoperimetric inequality and how it leads to the Faber-Krahn inequality. We will then discuss how to establish quantitative forms of these inequalities. This entails measuring how close a set is to a ball if the perimeter (or first eigenvalue of the Laplacian) is close to that of the ball. We will conclude by showing how quantitative inequalities can be useful.
