 ealed to the public in The Muck\, the Seeds\, the Weeds\, the Blossoming\:
  The Journals of Karen Blessen\, an exhibit that features 24 of Karen Bles
 sen’s journals recently donated to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln 
 Libraries Archives & Special Collections. \n\nOpening on September 18\, an
 d running through February 2026\, this exhibit is the first time her journ
 als will have gone on display. The exhibit is located on the second-floor 
 link of Love Library and is accessible during the hours Love Library is op
 en.\n\nBorn and raised in Columbus\, Nebraska\, Blessen graduated from the
  University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1973 and became an artist\, writer\, 
 and freelancer for 10 years before working at the Dallas Morning News (DMN
 ) from 1984 to 1989. While at the DMN\, Blessen became the first graphic a
 rtist to win a Pulitzer Prize (1989) as part of a story team that produced
  the special section “Anatomy of an Air Disaster\: The Final Flight of 5
 0 Sierra Kilo\,” which explained why the airliner crashed. \n\nBlessen
 ’s journaling began after graduation and by 2025 her consistent practice
  had produced more than 155 journals. In May of this year\, she donated 25
  of the journals\, ranging in date from 2013 to 2022\, to Archives & Speci
 al Collections. \n\nThe public is invited to the opening reception set for
  5\:00-6\:30 p.m. on September 18.\n\nThis exhibit is a signature event of
  the Pages to Paths\: A Celebration of Our Libraries initiative to celebra
 te our history\, raise awareness\, and co-create the future of the Univers
 ity of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries with our communities.

 iative\, a partnership between the Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Oklahoma and th
 e Center for Great Plains Studies\, aims to promote healing and reconcilia
 tion in our region by reconnecting the Otoe-Missouria Tribe to one of thei
 r homelands in southeast Nebraska and educating non-Native people about th
 e history and ongoing presence of the Otoe-Missouria and other Indigenous 
 peoples in our region. \nThis will be the first exhibition to center Otoe-
 Missouria artists and their creative work. Jessica Moore Harjo\, Ph.D. (Ot
 oe-Missouria/Osage/Pawnee)\, is the curatorial director for this exhibitio
 n.\n\n“Big Blue Reservation\: Struggles and Hope of the Otoe-Missouria T
 ribe”\nSeptember 5–December 20\, 2025\nMezzanine Gallery\nOne hundred 
 seventy years ago\, the Treaty of 1854 was passed by Congress\, authorizin
 g the move of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe to the Big Blue Reservation in Gage
  County\, Nebraska. The Tribe watched as acre by acre of their land was so
 ld off by the government and treaties were broken. In 1881\, the Tribe was
  moved from this reservation to Red Rock\, Oklahoma.\nThe Gage County Hist
 orical Society\, along with the Otoe-Missouria Tribe\, arranged a summer e
 xhibit in 2024 to educate the public about this important part of American
  history. The Otoe-Missouria Tribe once called Southeast Nebraska home. Th
 rough the displacement of the people during the 1800s\, they lost sacred t
 raditions. This exhibit includes their voices of how that loss affected th
 em into the present.\nThe Tribe and the Society wanted this exhibit to tra
 vel to other institutions to provide a cultural history of Nebraska\, util
 izing the Tribe’s perspective. As a result of this hard work\, the Gage 
 County Historical Society’s traveling exhibit will open in the Great Pla
 ins Art Museum’s mezzanine gallery on Sept. 5\, 2025. This exhibit is on
  view in conjunction with “Reflections of Our People\, Our Ways\, Our La

 of Blood” explores major traumas in the author’s life. Autobiographica
 l in nature\, the book is broken into three sections that each deal with a
  trauma the author has endured\, and it explores a range of themes includi
 ng gun violence\, conversion therapy\, misuse of drugs\, addiction\, and d
 omestic violence. But hope balances the anger\, harm\, and pain. Above all
 \, Shannon is a survivor\, learning to incorporate these experiences into 
 a life filled with healing and lived on his own terms.\n\nTeo Shannon hold
 s a PhD in English from UNL and is a cofounder and a co-EIC of the literar
 y journal Cotton Xenomorph. His poetry has appeared in numerous journals a
 nd anthologies. He lives in Michigan.
