Dr. Chung Song will present “Traffic Noise Reduction Using Active Noise Cancellation Technique”:

Wall type sound barriers are frequently used to reduce the level of traffic noise along highways, particularly along busy highways in metropolitan areas. These wall type sound barriers, however, are effective only in the immediate vicinity of where they are placed. The noise waves will still travel far distances due to the refraction and reflection from surrounding structures and the air itself. For example, during the night time in summer, air density high in the sky is higher than that on the surface, causing a substantial amount of noise waves to be reflected and refracted back to residential areas which may be far from the highways. This effect significantly reduces the effectiveness of the sound barriers.

The improperly controlled traffic noises may cause psychological discomfort, physical damages to human life, and group complaints from time to time. To improve this situation, this study presents the development of an Active Noise Reduction (ANR) or Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technique to effectively cancel out the traffic noise.
