Our syllabi are often our students’ first exposure to us as teachers. These documents set the tone and set the rules, but the traditional syllabus falls short of supporting all our learners. In this workshop, we will focus on the three biggest equity considerations: tone, attendance policies, and late policies. You will exchange your syllabus with peers to receive feedback on tone and language. You will also choose a policy to rewrite for greater equity. At the end of this hour-long workshop, you will have a revised syllabus draft.
Learning outcomes:
Define the purpose of your syllabus (there may be more purposes than you think!).
Evaluate the tone and language of your syllabus.
Revise a policy with high equity impact.
Receive feedback from peers at your table.
