This workshop combines the principles of backward course design with a forward-thinking approach to integrating AI into your curriculum. As AI tools become increasingly accessible, they are reshaping the landscape of teaching and learning, influencing both the types of learning outcomes we set and the methods we use to achieve them. This course design workshop will guide you through the three phases of backward design—defining course goals, crafting measurable learning objectives, and aligning assessments and activities—all within the context of AI’s evolving role in education.

During this hands-on training, you will:
Define learning goals that reflect the distinctive human skills and competencies essential in an AI-enhanced learning environment.

Develop measurable student learning objectives that consider both traditional knowledge mastery and new competencies related to AI literacy and critical thinking.

Brainstorm assignments, assessments, and learning experiences that incorporate or address AI in ways that enrich the learning process while preserving human creativity and critical engagement.

Ensure alignment between learning experiences, assessments, course objectives, and goals, with a specific focus on how AI can both support and challenge these elements.

Collaborate with peers and instructional designers to share insights, strategies, and examples of AI-integrated curriculum design.

In this workshop, we use Bloom’s Taxonomy not as the focus but as a framework for reimagining course design in light of AI’s capabilities. You will explore each level of Bloom’s with a fresh perspective on how AI tools can assist or even automate certain learning activities. However, you’ll also identify unique human skills to emphasize at each level—skills that remain vital in the age of AI, such as critical analysis, ethical reasoning, and innovative thinking.

Whether you intend to integrate, limit, or guide AI use in your courses, this workshop will provide you with practical strategies and examples to thoughtfully adapt your curriculum. We’ll consider scenarios from simple AI prompts to advanced interactions, allowing you to tailor your course design to your students’ needs and the dynamic possibilities of AI. By the end, you’ll have a clear, actionable framework for creating courses that harness AI’s potential while fostering deep, meaningful learning experiences.
