This program presents two major organ symphonies by American composers—the second symphony of Edward Shippen Barnes (1887-1958) and the landmark Symphony in G by Leo Sowerby (1895-1968). The Schoenstein organ at First-Plymouth Congregational Church is ideally suited to this music, offering the enormous range of color and dynamics needed to deliver these orchestrally conceived works. Christopher Marks is a leading scholar and performer in American organ works of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
