Topic: Substance Use, Mental Disorder, and Threat Assessment: Evolving Community Standards
This two-day workshop will focus upon the current scientific discipline of threat assessment and threat management, with a particular emphasis upon the contribution of drugs of abuse and mental disorder to this social problem.

Topics will include: the distinction between predatory and affective violence; immediate or proximal warning behaviors for targeted violence; the ways in which mental disorder can restrain, facilitate, and in some cases, cause violent behavior; the specific role of alcohol and psychostimulants in targeted violence risk; and current data on targeted attacks and mass attacks, summarized by FBI and US Secret Service recent studies. A discussion of ethics in threat management will also be presented. Management of risk and evolving community standards will be woven into the discussions.
