SUMMARY:Agronomy and Horticulture Seminar\: Amit Jhala
STATUS:CONFIRMED
DESCRIPTION:Amit Jhala\, Professor/Extension Weed Management Specialist\, D
 epartment of Agronomy and Horticulture\, UNL.\nManaging herbicide-resistan
t weeds is a challenge for growers. Once herbicide-resistant weed evolve\,
it can be spread by pollen\, known as pollen-mediated gene flow. Reproduc
tive biology differs markedly among weed species\, as does the potential f
or gene flow. Pollen-mediated gene flow at a distance could allow the spre
ad of rare herbicide resistance alleles and favor the evolution of multipl
e herbicide-resistant biotypes through the accumulation of resistance gene
s in an individual weed or weed population. The speaker will discuss examp
les of economically important weeds such as waterhemp\, palmer amaranth\,
and giant ragweed and crops such as corn and popcorn to demonstrate the ro
le of pollen-mediated gene flow in transfer of herbicide-resistance allele
 s. For more information about speaker’s research program\: https\://agro
