2024 UNL Microbiology Research Symposium

Symposium Keynote Speakers - Dr. Romy Chakraborty & Dr. Elizabeth VanWormer
Dr. Romy Chakraborty is Head of the Ecology Department in the Earth & Environmental Sciences Area. As an environmental microbiologist, Chakraborty has pioneered identification of unique microbes mediating critical carbon and nitrogen metabolisms in diverse ecosystems. Dr. Chakraborty is involved in extensive outreach and mentorship, much of which is focused on diversity and inclusion in STEM, her efforts have led to very positive impacts in the community, at the Laboratory, and on the career trajectories of many diverse, early career scientists.

Dr. Elizabeth VanWormer, UNL Associate Professor - Veterinary Epidemiologist & One Health Coordinator - “In the United States and East Africa, my research, teaching, and outreach address diverse health issues at the interface of humans, animals (both domestic and wild), and the environment. As an epidemiologist, I integrate animal and human disease surveillance, molecular epidemiology, and spatial disease modeling methods to investigate zoonotic disease transmission. Using a One Health approach, I work with students, multi-disciplinary researchers, and non-academic stakeholders, linking diverse tools and perspectives to address complex health challenges.”

Participation at the symposium provides an opportunity to practice science communication for MBIO 101 students as well as for the UNL Microbiology Community to interact and share in student research accomplishments.

Register today!! Poster submissions open November 1st.
