Climate flashpoints — including protests and demonstrations, controversial campus speakers, and viral social media posts— occur across a wide range of college campuses these days. Such events can catch campus professionals off guard, making it difficult to respond appropriately to our students when they most need our support. And when left unaddressed, an inappropriate or lack of response can contribute to students’ feeling unwelcome and unsafe, potentially adversely impacting their well-being.

In these 90-minute workshops, Student Affairs professionals will use case studies to explore our readiness for campus flashpoints. We’ll discuss possible responses to climate flashpoints and identify strategies for facilitating difficult dialogues. By the close of this workshop, participants will have a framework for responding effectively to flashpoint incidents on campus.
