September 11, 2001 or often referred to as simply 9/11 is the day the United States underwent a series of terroristic attacks. Four passenger airplanes were hijacked by Al-Qaeda terrorist to be turned into suicide attacks. Two of the planes crashed in New York City at the World Trade Center. The third plane crashed in Washington D.C. at the United States Department of Defense Building, the Pentagon. The final plane did not reach its intended destination (Washington D.C.) as it crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers tried to overcome the hijackers. In the series of these terroristic events nearly 3,000 innocent men, women and children lost their lives.

The 9/11 National Day of service is an event that began in 2002 in remembrance of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. People nationwide gather together on the anniversary of this day and serve their communities to honor the victims, survivors, firefighters and law enforcement personnel who responded to the attacks.

If you would like to honor these individuals, you can register for UNL’s 9/11 National Day of Service scheduled for September 10, 2017 at civic.engagement@unl.edu or call 402-472-6150.
