Curator and cofounder of Museum Exchange Michael Darling speaks with artists Lisa Sanditz and Leslie Wayne, whose paintings are on view in the exhibition “Storyville: The Intersection of Abstraction, Allusion, and Depiction.” Sheldon Museum of Art received Wayne’s work and several other recent acquisitions through Museum Exchange, the first digital platform for art donations.

Michael Darling is cofounder and chief growth officer of Museum Exchange. Previously, he served as the James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Seattle Art Museum, and Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He lives and works in Chicago.

Lisa Sanditz paints pulsating, vibrantly colored landscapes that capture the intersection between the natural world and the built environment and its effect on food production, consumption, ecology, and the economy. Her works are rooted in a fascination of how we organize ourselves in a commercial world and how we value and commodify the landscape. She lives and works in New York.

Leslie Wayne approaches oil paint as a sculptural material, often scraping, folding, cutting, collaging, and building up her surfaces. Her work takes on three-dimensional forms through layering and varying textures and colors. Many of her works are shaped in ways that accentuate movement and instability, challenging the traditional view of painting by creating three-dimensional stand-ins for the objects they represent. She lives and works in New York.

Admission is free.
