Data and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are bringing unprecedented for the built environment. On one hand, advances in technologies ranging from building information modeling to sensors and robotics open new opportunities for lifecycle data collection and management – not only about the physical infrastructure, but also about the people, their behaviors, and their responses and interactions with the built environment. On the other hand, data analytics, machine learning, and AI offer a new wave of opportunities for turning data into actionable insights and enabling autonomous operations. Data-driven digital technologies could foster new modes of scientific discovery and efficient operation that leverage data, context, and intelligence for more sustainable and efficient design, construction, operation, and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure systems. Dr. El-Gohary will discuss recent research efforts and directions that aim to advance the science and application of data analytics and AI for smart and sustainable buildings and infrastructure systems. This includes advanced methods and techniques for (1) extracting meaningful information from unstructured data sources that have traditionally been difficult to digest and harness; (2) aligning and linking data with different representations, in heterogeneous formats, and from multiple sources to move from isolated data to fully-integrated multi-source predictive analytics; and (3) enabling data-driven autonomous systems that can unleash the power of data and AI for supporting data-driven discovery and automation. The lecture will focus on discussion of opportunities, challenges, and the path forward.
