Community engagement and participatory design research (CBDR) have become well-established practices among health communication scholars. Although these practices aim to enrich communities and advance scholarship, it is essential to employ culturally respectful, responsive, and strength-based approaches that prioritize the community’s voice. This talk will examine how CBDR can support vulnerable communities in practice and policy, build their capacity, and collaborate with them to address health challenges. It will also underscore the importance of recognizing the structural factors impacting the health of vulnerable populations, identifying obstacles, and preparing ourselves to respect and understand the community’s historical context.

Dr. Cooke-Jackson specializes in Health Communication and Behavioral Science, employing community-based participatory research and media literacy to assist communities in developing innovative and practical approaches for sustainable change. She serves as the co-director of the Intimate Communication Lab and envisions her research at the intersection of culture, health disparities, and marginalized populations. Her ongoing scholarly work integrates intimacy and reproductive health to promote empowerment among underserved populations, particularly people of color and gender minorities. She has dedicated significant effort to utilizing memorable messages to develop theory and conduct research aimed at improving health outcomes, particularly in the realm of sexual health.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration: https://unl.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_YjzSqRdQTzu_kGhxTKW7fQ
