Additional Info: ARCH
The love of building with blocks for many starts early in life with childhood toys such as Legos and ABC blocks, so it’s no wonder faculty and students with the College of Architecture are excited about an upcoming concrete block assembly competition called the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) Block Competition scheduled for Friday, October 9th on the northwest lawn and cul de sac of Architecture Hall. The events starts at 3:45 pm and ends at 6 pm.
Undergraduate students from all three programs in select courses, will come together for an active interdisciplinary concrete block challenge. Each team, averaging 12 students, will be competing in relay format to build a square block planter on 4’ x 4’ wood pallets. Each team will have one student lay a block before they hand off the competition to the next person in line with the cycle repeating until the project is finished. Each person should have the opportunity to lay 2 blocks each. Students will be awarded points for speed, quality, workmanship and attention to detail. The winning team will be awarded a trophy that will be on display in Architecture Hall.

Before the competition begins, each team will be assigned a station for hands-on training where they will learn how to set block. Every station will have at least one mason and one other industry professional to help demonstrate and teach. Each student should be encouraged to set two-three blocks as part of the training process.
Masons and industry professionals will be available to answer questions but are not allowed to give hands-on support during the competition segment.

This entertaining competition allows students to experience masonry through hands-on learning and build connections with masons, suppliers and other industry personnel.

The competition is sponsored by Reimers Kaufman, Watkins Concrete Block, U-Mix, Ash Grove Packaging, Gerhold Concrete, JM2 Masonry, K&K Masonry, Kehm Contractors, and Midwest Masonry.
