Autonomous vehicles (a.k.a. driverless cars) are thought of as the future of transportation, and most people think that future will be a bright one. Driverless cars will eliminate traffic jams and car accidents, making our cities safer and our commutes easier. Walkers and bicyclists will no longer worry about distracted or aggressive drivers, and city planners will no longer need to worry about providing adequate parking for a car that stops only to pick up and drop off passengers. Perhaps…but for the time being, we can only speculate on whether or not driverless cars will live up to these promises. Dan Piatkowski, assistant professor of community and regional planning, will present an alternative scenario. One where driverless cars could lead us further into a world of sprawling, congested, and unsustainable cities, and what we can do to make sure that doesn’t happen.

You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the Master of Community and Regional Planning Program at UNL after the presentation.

Lunch provided!
