Dr. Deborah New, Senior Staff Assistant, Idaho National Laboratory, will present the seminar “An Overview of Algal Biofuels at INL: Logistics, Stabilization, and Fractionation” on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 4:00 PM in N172 Beadle Center.

Dr. Newby is a senior staff scientist and serves as the Algae Technology Lead for the Biofuels and Renewable Energy Technologies Department. Her research foci developed over her 13 year tenure at the laboratory span a broad range of areas including: development of nucleic acid diagnostics; nonaqueous biocatalysis for value-added chemical production, molecular characterization of methanotrophic bacteria, and use of extremophiles to improve biomining and ethanol production. Her current focus is on algal biofuels where the INL team is developing a variety of technologies focused on overcoming key barriers to algal biofuel viability including a spatially and temporally explicit technoeconomic logistics model; an algal feedstock stabilization approach that involves blending of algae with terrestrial biomass; and methods of fractionation and stabilization of algal-derived pyrolysis through the use of supercritical CO2.
