The UNL Jazz Studies area in the Glenn Korff School of Music and Chateau Development LLC announce the final large ensemble concert for the 2017-2018 season. The UNL Big Band, under the director of Andrew Janak, will begin the program and then we will welcome three-time Grammy nominee, saxophonist Donny McCaslin, with the critically acclaimed UNL Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Paul Haar. You won’t want to miss this amazing night of music. Please join us on Friday, April 20, 2018 at 7:30 P.M. in Kimball Recital Hall.
Directed by Dr. Paul Haar, the Jazz Orchestra is the university’s showcase jazz organization and one of the Glenn Korff School of Music’s most visible performing groups. This versatile ensemble performs all styles of music from Duke Ellington to the contemporary artists of today.
Directed by Andrew Janak, Big Band is a vital component of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln jazz curriculum. Through intensive rehearsal and performance, students are encouraged to develop and nurture the fundamental skills necessary to perform a wide variety of repertoire, and to engage in the creative process through improvisation. UNL Big Band is specifically designed to motivate and inform music educators and aspiring teachers through innovative programming and pedagogical methods.
Three-time GRAMMY® nominee Donny McCaslin is the leading saxophonist, composer, and musical pioneer of his generation, receiving wide commercial and critical acclaim in jazz, rock and electronica circles alike. With 12 albums to his name, McCaslin is best known for his collaboration and friendship with the late David Bowie, who tasked McCaslin to work hand-in-hand on his final album, Blackstar.
Tickets: General Admission $5; Students/Seniors $3.
