Sponsored by UNO International Studies the History Department, the Center for Afghanistan Studies, and the American Institute for Iranian Studies (AllrS), this roundtable will focus on the following themes: the conflict between Iran and the US since the 1978-79 Iranian Revolution, foreign relations of Iran (and the US) toward other countries in the Middle East, the rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia in the Middle East and the Islamic World, developments and challenges within Iranian society and government, the current state and future of the Iranian economy with the re-imposition of US sanctions, how the US invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq changed Iran’s status in the Middle East, the 2009 elections in Iran and the Arab Awakening of 2011 and their effect on the current state of affairs in the Middle East, and the status of the threat that Iran poses (if any) to the US and its allies in the Middle East.
