The Concordia String Trio will present a concert Monday, February 18 at 7:30PM in Westbrook Recital Hall. Admission to this concert is free.
The trio members are Marcia Henry Liebenow, violinist, Concertmaster of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and faculty member at Bradley University; Leslie Perna, Professor of Viola at the University of Missouri-Columbia and member of the Esterhazy Quartet; and Karen Becker, Professor of Cello in the Glenn Korff School of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and principal cellist of the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra.
The February 18th concert features works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Irving Fine, Andrew List, and George Enescu. The Beethoven String Trio in G Major, Op. 9, No. 1 and the Irving Fine Fantasia for String Trio are two of the great string trio masterworks. Nationally recognized American composer Andrew List, professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, was recently selected as a composer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra in its Residence Composers’ Project. He has written several works for the Concordia String Trio.
The Concordia String Trio explores and expands the eclectic repertoire of an under-appreciated genre—the string trio. This versatile ensemble has built a reputation for its exciting performances and innovative programs, juxtaposing pieces from the standard string trio repertoire with new compositions and little-known works of great composers. Formed in 1999, the Trio has performed recitals, educational programs, and given lecture/demonstrations throughout the United States.
They were featured on WTVP public television in a program entitled “Marcia and Friends” as part of the Peoria Symphony’s Sound Bites series. The Trio has presented at national ASTA conventions, and in 2017 performed and taught at the Omaha Conservatory Summer Music Institute. They also have also been resident ensemble at the Warebrook Contemporary Music Festival in Vermont.
This spring, the Concordia String Trio will be presenting concerts and Master Classes throughout the Midwest. Their American Vistas CD was released in August 2018 on the Centaur label, and their Viennese String Trios CD was released in 2017, also with Centaur. Copies of both CDs will be available for purchase at the performance.
The Concordia String Trio is cellist Karen Becker, professor of cello in the Glenn Korff School of Music (UNL) and principal cellist of the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra; violinist Marcia Henry Liebenow, Concertmaster of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and faculty member at Bradley University; and violist Leslie Perna, professor of viola and member of the Esterhazy Quartet at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
