Presented by the Arabic Studies Program, the film screening is part of programming for the Big Arabic Day. The Four Hijabs is an animated short film that explores the multiple meanings of four hijabs mentioned in 16 Qur’anic verses through Arab-Muslim feminist lenses. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion that will include Jamil Khoury, a co-writer of the film and Anna Hayden-Roy, the animator.
Khoury holds a M.A. degree in Religious Studies from The University of Chicago Divinity School and a B.S. degree in International Relations from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. He is a Kellogg Executive Scholar (Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University) and has been awarded a Certificate of Professional Achievement in Nonprofit Management. Khoury is the 2015 recipient of the Community Leader Award from the Association for Asian American Studies, the 2013 recipient of the Actor’s Equity Association’s Kathryn V. Lamkey Award for promoting diversity and inclusion in theater, and the 2010 recipient of the 3 Arts Artist Award for Play writing.
This diversity promoting event is an effort to open a safe space for healthy dialogue between interested UNl faculty, staff and students and the growing immigrant community of Lincoln. The event also provides students a chance to be more effectively engaged in a professional experience of a global exchange of ideas through discussing different approaches to feminism, Quran, Hijab and Islam.
