Edythe London will join us on October 13, 2022, at 1:30pm CT via Zoom to present “What Brain Imaging Has Taught Us About Addiction.”

She will cover how the imaging of brain structure, chemistry and function is possible using noninvasive techniques that have been applied to the study of addiction. Dr. London will also discuss how it is possible to identify regional and circuit-level abnormalities that maintain drug misuse and promote a return to drug use after the initiation of abstinence. Additionally, she will touch on molecular imaging which can define neurochemical therapeutic targets, and studies of brain function and their associations with maladaptive behavior can guide anatomically based treatments, involving targeted brain stimulation, now under development.

Dr. London is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, and Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at UCLA. Her work focuses on neurochemical and circuit-level abnormalities to inform evidence-based treatments for addiction. Bridging psychiatry, pharmacology and neuroscience, she has provided notable firsts: mapping drug-induced euphoria and drug craving in the human brain, visualizing the cerebral distributions of actions of abused drugs, and developing probes for external brain imaging. Focusing on corticostriatal circuitry, dopamine receptor signaling, and executive functioning, her recent work provides potential therapeutic targets for addiction.
