Ethan Welch will present his comprehensive exam topic, “Laser Wakefield Acceleration” in-person.

Abstract: A high intensity laser can drive plasma wave in an underdense plasma, which produce electric
fields in excess of 100 Gev/m, three orders of magnitude greater than conventional Radio Frequency
(RF) accelerators. These electric fields can accelerate electrons to high energies in what is called
Laser-Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA). This paper discusses the theory and experimental applications of various LWFA schemes including direct laser acceleration, linear LWFA, plasma beat wave
accelerators, using multiple laser pulses, self-modulated LWFA, and 3D Nonlinear LWFA.
