Kylie Allen’s research is focused on metalloenzymes in methanogenic archaea, organisms that play a central role in the global carbon cycle and are responsible for at least 70% of global methane emissions. Her lab studies novel radical S-adenosylmethionine enzymes in these organisms as well as the key methane-generating enzyme, methyl-coenzyme M reductase (MCR). Current work on MCR is focused on developing a system for the heterologous expression of diverse MCRs in the model methanogen, Methanococcus maripaludis, as well as understanding the assembly process and elucidating the significance of modified F430 cofactors that function with the enzyme.
