The Microbiome and Cervical Cancer Tanzania:
Nearly all cervical cancers are causally associated with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Sub-Saharan African populations are disproportionately burdened by HPV-related cancers, particularly among HIV positive populations. Previous studies have suggested that the cervical microbiota is a co-factor for development of cervical malignancies, though the precise shift in cervical microbiota responsible has not been identified.
Ocular Cancer in Zambia:
The etiopathogenesis of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) is not fully understood. We assessed the frequency of oncogenic viruses in OSSN by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Merkel cell virus (MCV), Kaposi sarcoma virus, and adenovirus.
