Dr. R. Sekhar Chivukula will present his colloquium topic, “Planning for the Future of US High-Energy Physics” in-person. Coffee and cookies will be available beforehand a 3:30pm in the first floor atrium of Jorgensen Hall.

Abstract: For the last four decades, every seven to ten years, the US High-Energy Physics community has undertaken a (generally) year-long Community Planning Exercise sponsored by the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. The goal of these exercises was to identify the most important scientific questions in the field for the following two decades and the facilities, infrastructure, and R&D needed to pursue them. The most recent community planning exercise (which was to conclude in 2021 but was interrupted by COVID) has just concluded. In this talk I will give an overview of our current understanding of the basic constituents of matter and the forces by which they interact and, based on the
conclusions of the planning exercise, outline possible next steps in our investigation of the fundamental laws governing our universe.
