Long-term trends and new developments are impacting the international trading system. 2018 to date has seen the imposition of U.S. unilateral tariffs on more than $100 billion of imports (with tariffs on $200 billion more to take effect soon) and resulting retaliation by several major trading partners; renegotiation of existing trade agreements such as NAFTA and KORUS; the conclusion of major trade agreement negotiations that do not include the U.S., leaving U.S. businesses at potential competitive disadvantage; and twice the number of new trade-restrictive measures applied by countries compared to last year, according to the WTO.
