Dr. Peter Demerath is an Associate Professor in the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development and coordinator of its educational administration program. An educational anthropologist, his research and teaching are both animated by an abiding interest in illuminating the cultural basis of everday educational practices and the role of class culture in the perpetuation of social inequality through education. He studies secondary education in both the United States and Papua New Guinea. He is the author of Producing Success: The Culture of Personal Advancement in an American High School (University of Chicago Press, 2009), which Dr. Herve’ Varenne of Teachers College Columbia University described as, “A distinguished addition to the literature on American High Schools.” Dr. Demerath’s address will build from the same line of research as that book.
