Adolescent substance use tends to be a social activity that occurs in the company of friends. Solitary substance use, which describes using substances while alone, is less common among teens and represents a more serious form of substance involvement than social-only use. This presentation describes the prevalence of adolescent solitary alcohol and marijuana use and reviews our research that elucidates the motivational antecedents and adverse consequences of such use. Next steps for further inquiry and implications for preventative and treatment interventions are discussed.
