Through site visits, the course focuses on Buddhist and Shint? traditions since antiquity and makes an inquiry as to how Japan’s consumer society interact with them to build popular cultural contents and mercantile activities. In other words, going beyond our theoretical understanding of religions in Japan, the course allows you to explore the ways Buddhism and Shint? are consumed and integrated into people’s quotidian life environments. To this end, the course aims to promote your understanding of the cultural norms and notion of religions that significantly differ from North American counterparts.
