“Coherent Communication – Digital and Optical Signal Processing”
Stupendous increase in demand for capacity in optical fiber communication has resulted in a very quick adaptation of coherent communication, where the data is modulated in amplitude and phase and is also multiplexed in wavelength, polarization and space. Digital signal processing of the received data has become indispensable in coherent communication to correct for impairments originating in the transmitter, channel and receiver. The nature of these algorithms change for higher signaling rates, increased constellation order and in space division multiplexing. In this talk, we will present some of the joint impairment compensation algorithms for higher order modulation formats and in space division multiplexing. We also present some optical signal processing schemes that would augment the digital signal processing for advanced modulation formats, thereby improving the energy efficiency of the system.
Deepa Venkitesh obtained her Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Kerala and PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. Her areas of research interest include coherent optical communication and photonic signal processing for analog and digital systems. She has published over fifty articles in international peer reviewed journals and many more in conferences. She was bestowed with the Young Faculty Recognition Award of IIT Madras in 2012, and the Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation Fellowship of INAE in 2021. She is Senior Member of OSA, and is currently the Associate Editor of the OSA journal- Advances in Optics and Photonics. She is also currently the Associate Vice President of “Women in Photonics” of the IEEE Photonics Society.
