Frank B. Wilderson III is an award-winning writer, poet, scholar, activist and emerging filmmaker. Wilderson is professor and chair of African American Studies, and a core faculty member of the Culture & Theory Ph.D. Program at UC Irvine.

Wilderson’s work is revolutionary in the realm of critical theory, Afro-pessimism, and intersections of race and social justice, and his interdisciplinary work discusses the importance of understanding anti-Black violence and racism. Wilderson continues to shape the understanding of race, trauma, and liberation, making him a pivotal figure in contemporary critical thought.

He is the author of Afropessimism (Liveright Press, 2020), which was long-listed for the National Book Award; Red, White, & Black: Cinema and the Structure of U.S. Antagonisms (Duke UP, 2010); and Incognegro: A Memoir of Exile and Apartheid (Duke UP, 2015), winner of the American Book Award and The Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Legacy Award.
