The University of Nebraska Brass Quintet will present a Fall Recital on November 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall. The quintet is performing music by composers we know and music by composers who are new to us. We will premier Scott Quackenbush’s transcription of Jean Sibelius’ Andante Festivo as well as a new original composition by Patrice Caratini titled Passages. Passages demonstrates one if the most effective uses of jazz harmony in the classical brass quintet that we have ever encountered. In addition, we will revisit an old friend in Jan Koetsier. This time we will perform Quintetto Lirico. This is a rarely performed work that is both lyrical and virtuosic. The University of Nebraska Brass Quintet is comprised of faculty members Scott Quackenbush and K. Craig Bircher on trumpet, Alan Mattingly on horn, Scott Anderson on trombone and tubist Craig Fuller.
The University of Nebraska Brass Quintet is comprised of faculty from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The quintet is dedicated to the performance of original repertoire works and new music for brass quintet. Recent concerts have featured works by Eric Ewazen, Jan Bach, Witold Lutoslawski, Juraj Filas, Rayner Brown, Anthony Plog, Desire Dondeyne, Ingolf Dahl, Michael Kamen, Andre Previn, William Schuman, Eugene Bozza, Henri Sauguet and Arthur Harris. The quintet has been active in commissioning new works including Copernicus for Quintet and Wind Band by Juraj Filas and Nebrasska for Brass Quintet by Bruce Broughton. The quintet recently embarked on a project to record the quintet music of Broughton with a release date of Spring 2017. The University of Nebraska Brass Quintet has performed on the Omaha Chamber Music Society Series, the Meadowlark Festival, the International Brass Chamber Music Festival and have toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe.
