The Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute (DWFI) was established just over a decade ago with an ambitious mission to contribute to achieving a water and food secure world. The intent was to leverage and catalyze the deep bench of expertise in water management and agriculture within the university and across the state. The institute’s efforts were to be impactful, and, while firmly rooted in Nebraska, be truly global.
Achieving water and food security requires tangible and sustainable progress at the local level, where the mix of bio-physical, social, cultural, market access, institutional arrangements, and other facets are unique. Each setting is also being affected by important drivers, such as climate, population, economic growth and political shocks.
Drawing on insights from a number of contexts, Peter will examine the challenges and opportunities of this mission and consider the role of applied research in developing viable technical, practice and policy solutions that meet the needs of the relevant producer, manager or decisions maker.
