This new curriculum unit from our partners at the Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE) examines the major themes and issues with socialism as well as covering the ideas of what socialism is, how it’s understood today, and how it was applied in the past.?

In this workshop, we will focus on the Nordic countries of Sweden and Denmark.? Many progressives in the U.S. look to these nations as highlighting the benefits of socialism: universal health care for all, free education from kindergarten to university, social-security benefits including unemployment compensation up to 300 days, a housing allowance, pensions for retired workers, child support up to age 16, and compensation for those who cannot achieve a reasonable standard of living.? Yet today, these benefits are not financed by government management of the economy, they are made possible by free market economies ranked (by the Index of Economic Freedom) as freer even than the United States’ economic system is!

How have these Nordic nations created a balance between free markets and social welfare systems?? What are the trade-offs they have had to accept to make this system work in the 21st?century?? And, what happened in each of these countries when the government tried to “take control of the means of production”??

Data, analysis, and student activities will highlight the history of socialist thought and application over time.? Workshop will include direct connections to middle and high school standards on how to compare/contrast different government AND economic systems.

To complete registration, a $25 refundable deposit is required via the online registration.

Upon completion of the workshop, teacher participants will receive a $125 to cover both stipend and deposit.
