Assimmigration: Dismantling Families and Assimilating the Children Left Behind
Family laws protect inalienable rights to parents and children as established by common law and guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. However, modern immigration policies and criminal laws threaten the sanctity of the family unit when these systems intersect. In my article, I coin the phrase Assimmigration. Assimmigration is the confluence of family, child welfare, and crimmigration legal systems that permanently deprive deported and detained noncitizen parents of their parental rights and then coercively assimilate their children into American culture.
