Dr. Carlos T. Moraes, professor, Department of Neurology and Cell Biology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, will present the seminar “Mitochondrial DNA Double-Straind Breaks: Consequences and Uses.”
Dr. Carlos Moraes’ group at the University of Miami was established in 1993 focusing on different aspects of mitochondrial dysfunction, including: nuclear-mitochondrial communication, the pathogenesis of mitochondrial diseases, the development of genetic treatments and the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in age-related degenerative processes. In the last decade, they have used mitochondrial-targeted nucleases to eliminate specific mtDNA haplotypes.
