The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension and the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension are hosting two corn residue cooperator field days, Oct. 20 and 28, 2016, in Nebraska City and Scottsbluff, Neb.

The purpose of the field days is to present the highlights of data collected from a three-year study to demonstrate the impact of grazing and baling corn residue on soil and subsequent crop yields.

“Previous research in Mead and Brule, Neb. has shown that grazing of corn residue has not resulted in negative impacts on subsequent crop yields or significant amounts of compaction,” Mary Drewnoski, UNL Beef Systems Specialist, said.

“These field days are a chance for farmers to see what the impacts were in their region and decide if corn residue can be used as a potential revenue stream on their farm.”

Farmers can choose one of the two locations where they will have the opportunity to see crops growing in the areas of the field where corn residue was previously grazed, baled, or left in the field.

Topics to be discussed are:
1. How removal of residue affects crop yields
2. How removal of residue affects the soil
3. Crop producer and consultant perspectives on grazing of corn residue

Time, date, and place for cooperator field day:
5:30 p.m., Oct. 20, Intersection of 1st Street and West Street, Julian, NE 68378 (Nebraska City)

12:30 p.m., Oct. 28, 69361 Lionel Harris Rd., Scottsbluff
