The ability to accurately measure and quantify above-ground green biomass in salt marsh habitats would be a valuable tool for coastal resource managers and environmental specialists. This project investigates the potential for close-range remote sensing techniques to assist with such analyses. Spectral indices that have produced strong correlation between reflectance and biomass in other habitats were applied to hyperspectral measurements of salt marsh vegetation to identify what, if any, models may be successful in these diverse environments. Results were mixed as other factors, including substrate variability, tidal flooding, and vegetation canopy architecture, contributed substantially to measured reflectance. A full understanding of these factors may lead to more robust analyses in the future.
