SUMMARY:Women in Agriculture Book Club Discussion
STATUS:CONFIRMED
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Women in Agriculture program has announced “Brai
ding Sweetgrass\,” by Robin Wall Kimmerer\, as the selection for its fal
l book club. \n\nA virtual discussion about the book will be held at 7 p.m
. Central time on Dec. 8\, with Jenny Nixon\, a Rural Prosperity Nebraska
Extension educator. \n\nIn “Braiding Sweetgrass\,” Kimmerer brings the
lenses of knowledge of plants and animals together to show that the awake
ning of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgement and
celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living wor
ld. As a botanist and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation\, she embrac
es the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. \n\n“For
only when we can hear the languages of other beings are we capable of unde
rstanding the generosity of the earth and learning to give our own gifts i
n return\,” Kimmerer said. “This book will take us on a journey that i
s every bit as mystical as it is scientific\, as sacred as it is historica
l\, as clever as it is wise.” \n\nNixon\, who will lead the discussion a
bout the book\, is based out of Sioux County\, in the rural\, northwestern
Nebraska panhandle. In the past decade\, she has focused her work around
coaching communities to engage citizenry\, identify needs and develop plan
s and strategies that support and build local businesses\, retain and attr
act people and increase quality of life in the community. In her spare tim
e\, Nixon loves to make use of her range management degree by studying cul
tural uses of plants. She grows and maintains many native plants in her ya
rd and garden and is always amazed by the beauty and diversity that is dis
played throughout the year.\n\nThe discussion is free to attend and will b
e held over Zoom. Registration is required on the Nebraska Women in Agricu
lture website\, https\://wia.unl.edu. A complimentary copy of the book wil
l be mailed to the first 20 people who register. Participants may also pur
chase the book from their favorite retailer or download the Libby app to r
ent books or audio books. A library card is required. \n\nNebraska Extensi
on’s Women in Agriculture program will continue to host its book club ev
ery quarter. Featured books will cover a variety of topics\, such as grain
  marketing\, farm finance\, estate planning\, inspirational subjects and m
 ore.
