This lecture aims at introducing Harry Potter fans to the magic of Hogwarts that exist in our own world (aka science and technology). Specifically, the alchemical concepts used in the books as well as their relation to modern day science. The main topics to be covered in the presentation include the chemistry of gold, the sorcerer’s stone and the elixir of life. Other topics such as invisible inks and food chemistry will also be discussed.

Dr. Lai received her BS degree in biochemistry from California State University, Los Angeles and her PhD in chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. She joined the Department of Chemistry at UNL in 2007.
