Abstract: In this talk, I attempt to give an existence proof of active learning in a 160-person Calculus II course. I discuss some premonitions about large IBL courses, and I either agree with them and offer an explanation, or refute them with a counterexample from the course. This interactive talk will also bring up difficulties with large IBL courses, and conclude with a theme: the norms of the classroom, including fostering creativity and community, are key to this course’s “success.”
