Since the seminal work of Jean Renault, groupoid C*-algebras have been a fundamental source of interesting examples in the theory of operator algebras. They include group C*-algebras, commutative C*-algebras, crossed products of groups with commutative C*-algebras, graph C*-algebras and inverses semigroup C*-algebras. The above examples all belong to the class of etale groupoid C*-algebras.

The goal of this talk is to provide a gentle and motivated introduction to the subject of etale groupoid algebras, as well as to provide a survey of some of the main results and open questions (at least from my, admittedly, biased point of view). One of the fascinating things about the subject is that ideas from operator theory have been transported to ring theory, and more recently, there has been interaction in the reverse direction.
