SUMMARY:Mark Allan\, Brigham Young University
STATUS:CONFIRMED
DESCRIPTION:In this talk we review the isoperimetric inequality and how it
leads to the Faber-Krahn inequality. We will then discuss how to establish
quantitative forms of these inequalities. This entails measuring how clos
e a set is to a ball if the perimeter (or first eigenvalue of the Laplacia
n) is close to that of the ball. We will conclude by showing how quantitat
ive inequalities can be useful.
