This year’s annual Evenings of Dance Concert features the work of three internationally celebrated guest choreographers, two dance faculty members, whose work has also been seen around the world, two student works that have been presented for adjudication at the American College Dance Association Conference (ACDA) in Wichita KS and for the first time, there will be a performance by dance alumni who have founded “embi” a dance collective.

One of the guest artists was Julie Mayo, who is busy making groundbreaking, postmodern performance work in NYC. Julie came for a week in October and chose 6 students to work with her to create an original piece entitled “hush” a rustle in the burrow”.

Jenna Riegel, of Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company has come to Nebraska several times. She has set work on students as well as the professional company that Professor Susan Ourada directs, sloDance. Jenna joined UNL dance for another wonderful week of virtuosic, quirky and luscious master classes and dance making. With 13 dancers, it was a clear choice to represent UNL at ACDA, along with the work of student choreographers Lauren Kraemer and Jordan Patt.

The guest pieces are rounded out by the work of Laurel Jenkins, who incorporated thought and action around the Women’s March that was happening during her residency. Laurel performed for postmodern dance pioneer Tricia Brown for many years and layers much of that aesthetic to her work. It is especially meaningful to the dancers they were able to share some of this legacy, as Ms. Brown passed away weeks after the residency.

Add to this a lush sextet choreographed by Dr. Hye-Won Hwang, a sweet and quirky duet by embi, and finally work by Susan Ourada, who worked with members of the Senior Dance Ensemble and sloDance to express images that were inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem, “the Human Family”. These last two works will also be shown with the live accompaniment of Violinist Hyeyung Yoon and Cellist Greg Beaver from the Chiara String Quartet as well as Paul Barnes from the Glenn Korff School of Music on April 25th also at the Carson Studio Theater.
