The University of Nebraska Percussion Ensemble’s first concert of the year, “Memory Palace”, is shaped by Christopher Cerrone’s quartet for percussion and electronics of the same name.

According to Cerrone: “Memory Palace is a kind of paen to places and people that have deeply affected me. The title refers to an ancient technique of memorization that helped orators remember very long speeches by placing mental signposts in an imaginary location and ‘walking’ through it. In this piece, the palace is my life.”

The rest of the program echoes this feeling of nostalgia- of people, places, and musical styles.
Selections include the first full performance of Innerludes by Dave Hall; a hip-hop retrospective for multi-percussion entitled Boom Bap by Nick Werth; Bob Becker’s ragtime classic Girlfriends Medley featuring sophomore George Warner on xylophone solo; The Palace of Nine Perfections for percussion orchestra by Eric Ewazen, Second Thoughts by recent UNL Guest Artist Evan Chapman; and Memory Palace by Christopher Cerrone.

The Percussion Ensemble is made up of students from the percussion studio, under the direction of Dave Hall.
