Presented by Simeon Gilbert: Controlling the spin polarization of a 2D semiconductor through the proximity effect is an appealing option for creating spin field-effect transistors; however, experiments showing the feasibility of this method are still limited. Here I present a review of several spectroscopy techniques which have been used to directly measure the spin polarization of monolayer graphene and h-BN coupled to a magnetic substrate. When considered together these studies conclusively show that 2D monolayers can obtain a spin polarization that is dependent on the magnetization of the underlying substrate, and, in some cases, can be comparable to the spin polarization of conventional ferromagnets.
