Sajib Kumar Saha will present his comprehensive exam topic, “Electron Pulse Compression and Characterization using THz and IR Field” in person and via Zoom.

Abstract: To view the atomic motion during a chemical reaction and molecular rearrangement, the investigation of molecular dynamics requires a temporal resolution of a few 10s of fs. In Ultrafast electron diffraction, temporal resolution is mostly limited by the temporal broadening of the electron pulse because of the space charge effect. RF-based compression is mostly used to circumvent this issue. More recently, laser fields have been used to compress and characterize the electron pulse. In this technique, by introducing a structure, the electron’s momentum can be changed by the laser field. Compression and characterization of electron pulse are simultaneously possible using one laser source, which suppresses the jitter issue and facilitates better time resolution. In this comprehensive study, I will show the Physics of compression and characterization of electron pulse by using THz and IR laser fields. I will also present a design that can be used for electron beam characterization using IR laser fields in our lab setup.
