Introduction to git and GitHub
Version control isn’t just for programmers! It helps you reclaim old drafts, compare them against new ones, work beautifully with collaborators, track goal progress, and most importantly, it gives you peace of mind. This talk will cover the basic concepts of one very popular version control system, git, and how to use GitHub, a web-based repository service for projects. If time allows, there will be an opportunity for attendees to edit a demo webpage hosted on GitHub.
If you would like to participate in a hands-on mini-workshop following the formal presentation, please do the following (or look over someone else’s shoulder the day of the event):
1. Bring a laptop
2. Sign up for a GitHub account here: https://github.com/.
3. Send Jessica an email (jdussault@unl.edu) with your GitHub username and she will add you to a demo repository.
4. In addition, you’ll need to do one of the following:
a. If you aren’t into using the command line or don’t know what that is, install an application (https://desktop.github.com/) and follow its instructions.
b. If you do like the command line, follow these steps to set up your computer’s authentication (https://help.github.com/articles/generating-ssh-keys/).
